The HMG is 55 internal + 10 external, so the Kakwa can take a bigger load than the 40 liter capacity would suggest, and only gives up 10L overall to the HMG. There’s a Kakwa 55 supposedly coming out later this year for early next year delivery if you can wait and the extra size helps. HMG just dropped a new 40L pack.

The Kakwa's shoulder straps are certainly less padded than something like the liteAF, but that turned out to matter less than the way the straps are connected to the pack. Unlike basically all of the packs above, the connection on the Kakwa's shoulder straps is via a strip of material similar to the Joey.
